In the process of drilling for oil, the oil extraction industry uses complex chemical lubricants and coolants. These are generically known as drilling muds. They ensure that the drill bit works efficiently and they also carry ground rock to the surface.
Drilling muds are recycled in the well but require disposal once they are spent. The disposal of spent muds has historically been into landfill. This is becoming increasingly expensive.
ClearEarth Ltd jointly conducted trials to investigate the potential to amend spent muds so they could be used a growth medium for plants.
